ECO-MSE Riverbank Erosion Control in Bouldon, Shropshire

Riverbank Erosion Control Case Study

ECO-MSE Riverbank Erosion Control in Bouldon, Shropshire

ECO-MSE riverbank erosion control works were delivered by Green Gravity Walls at Bouldon, Shropshire for Shropshire Council, working alongside Kier Construction Ltd and Evans Construction Ltd. The project stabilised a heavily eroded riverbank using the ECO-MSE bag system, followed by hydroseeding to support long-term vegetation and naturalisation.

Customer Requirement

Shropshire Council required a long-term engineered solution to stabilise a riverbank in Bouldon that had suffered significant erosion.

The riverbank had experienced ongoing fluvial erosion, with water flow progressively undercutting the toe of the embankment and reducing overall slope stability. Continued erosion risked further loss of material and potential collapse.

The solution needed to work directly adjacent to a live watercourse, manage changing water levels, protect the surrounding natural environment and be suitable for constrained rural access conditions.

The ECO-MSE Solution

The ECO-MSE bag system was selected as a lightweight, modular and environmentally sensitive solution for the riverbank stabilisation works.

A temporary watercourse diversion was used to create a safer working corridor and allow controlled installation at the base of the new retaining structure. Unstable material was removed, and the ECO-MSE bags were then installed in stepped layers along the river alignment.

Drainage was incorporated through the wall to manage water flow and relieve pressure, while backfilling and compaction behind each course helped reinforce the structure and improve long-term stability.

Outcome

The project delivered a robust, low-carbon and environmentally responsible riverbank stabilisation solution.

Long-Term Erosion Control

The completed ECO-MSE retaining structure stabilised the embankment and provided long-term protection against further riverbank erosion.

Watercourse Management

The works were delivered during a temporary water diversion, reducing working risks and helping minimise disruption to the river corridor.

Improved Drainage

The permeable ECO-MSE bag system and integrated drainage helped reduce hydrostatic pressure on the retaining structure.

Restricted Access Solution

The lightweight modular format was suitable for confined rural access routes and narrow working platforms with limited plant space.

Environmental Integration

The finished structure was prepared for vegetation and hydroseeded to support naturalisation, habitat creation and Biodiversity Net Gain.

120+ Year Design Life

The ECO-MSE bags are manufactured from 140 GSM non-woven polypropylene geotextile and designed for long-term performance.

Why ECO-MSE Was Suitable for This Project

The ECO-MSE bag system was suitable for the Bouldon riverbank erosion control project because it provided a lightweight, modular and environmentally compliant alternative to concrete, steel or sheet piling.

The system was particularly suited to the site’s rural watercourse setting, where restricted access, limited working space and ecological sensitivity made heavy construction methods less practical. The permeable geotextile structure allowed water movement while providing the required retaining function and embankment stabilisation.

Following installation, Green Gravity Walls carried out hydroseeding works to encourage vegetation establishment, improve long-term soil stability and support natural integration with the surrounding riverbank environment.
