SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS ON TRACK: ECO-MSE WALL DELIVERS INNOVATIVE STATION UPGRADE AT NORMANTON

At first glance, passengers at Normanton Station may not notice the civil engineering solution underpinning the latest infrastructure improvements — but that’s by design. Behind the scenes, a quietly innovative and environmentally conscious retaining wall system has been installed, transforming the site with minimal disruption and maximum benefit.

Delivered by Green Gravity Walls on behalf of TMT, in collaboration with Northern Trains and Network Rail, the works at Normanton Station mark a forward-thinking approach to railway infrastructure, combining practical engineering with sustainable construction methods.

Meeting Engineering Needs with Green Solutions

The challenge at Normanton involved stabilising a section of raised ground adjacent to a failing wall on the station infrastructure — critical for both safety and long-term asset resilience. Traditional concrete retaining walls were an option, but the project team took a more progressive route by selecting the ECO-MSE bag system — a modular earth retention solution that’s both environmentally friendly and highly effective.

The ECO-MSE (Mechanically Stabilised Earth) system uses geotextile bags filled with engineered fill material, layered and compacted to create a robust and stable wall. Over time, the bags support vegetative growth, allowing the structure to blend into its surroundings and contribute to local biodiversity. It’s a solution that’s structurally sound, quick to install, and aligned with industry goals to reduce embodied carbon in civil engineering works.

Importantly, the vegetated finish of the ECO-MSE system supports Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) initiatives — now a statutory requirement for many infrastructure projects. By enabling the creation of green corridors, supporting native wildflowers, and improving pollinator habitats, ECO-MSE walls contribute measurable habitat units within the BNG assessment framework. At Normanton, this approach not only fulfilled technical requirements but also added ecological value to the site.

Key Benefits of the ECO-MSE System

  • Sustainability: Lower carbon footprint than traditional concrete or masonry walls; supports green infrastructure goals.

  • Speed of installation: Modular, lightweight components allowed for faster construction within limited access windows.

  • Aesthetic value: The finished wall promotes vegetation growth, reducing the visual impact on the station environment.

  • Durability: Proven geotechnical stability suitable for long-term use in challenging weather conditions.

  • BNG contribution: Facilitates compliance with biodiversity policy by creating functional habitats and enhancing site ecology.

Collaboration in Action

This project exemplifies the strength of collaboration across the rail supply chain. TMT led the project management and design coordination, with Green Gravity Walls overseeing on-site delivery. Input from Network Rail and Northern Trains ensured that all works met safety, operational, and environmental standards.

Careful scheduling allowed construction to take place without affecting station operations — an essential factor in any live rail environment. The ECO-MSE system’s modular nature proved advantageous here, enabling rapid assembly during off-peak hours and reducing the overall possession footprint.

Setting a Precedent for Greener Civils

As the rail industry pushes toward a more sustainable future, the success of projects like Normanton serves as a blueprint. Mechanically stabilised earth walls aren’t just a viable alternative — they’re increasingly a preferred solution where ground stabilisation is needed without the cost, carbon, and visual intrusion of traditional methods.

Normanton Station may be a local stop on the Northern network, but the work carried out here has national significance. It’s a small but powerful example of how civil engineering can evolve to meet modern challenges — without compromising on performance, safety, or sustainability.

As Network Rail and its partners continue to deliver a greener, smarter railway, the ECO-MSE installation at Normanton shows how innovation at ground level can shape the journey ahead.
